Samsung starts rolling out Lollipop OTA for the Galaxy S5 in Brazil

Samsung has at last started pushing out the much-anticipated Lollipop update to all unlocked variants of its former flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5, located in Brazil. As for added functionality, this upgrade transports the latest build of the Android operating system to the handset, in addition to a truckload of bug fixes and stability improvements.

  • Material Design: You will quickly notice a whole new colorful look and feel to your device – from fluid animations to new application and system themes, colors and widgets.
  • Notifications UI & Priorities: In order to alert you to the most timely and relevant information, the format and behavior of notifications have evolved:
    • notifications will appear on the lock screen and are intelligently ranked by type and who sent them.
    • you double-tap to open one, swipe left or right to clear one, or clear all notifications from the bottom of the list.
    • you can set the priority and privacy of notifications for each application.
    • very high priority notifications will pop up briefly over other applications so that you can take action.
    • when you dismiss a notification on one device it will be dismissed on your other Android devices, if they are connected to the Internet.
    • you can further tailor how notifications behave with the new Downtime and Ambient Display settings (see below).
  • New Interruptions & Downtime Settings: You can tailor how interruptions behave, choosing to allow all, none, or only priority interruptions.  You can personalize what counts as a priority interruption (reminders, events, calls, messages) and even tailor them to be from only contacts you specify.  The Downtime setting will allow only priority interruptions during the times and days that you specify.  e.g. allow only priority interruptions on the weekend.
  • Recent Apps (Multi-tasking): The redesigned Overview space (formerly called Recents) will include both applications and separate activities within those applications.  For instance, each open tab in Chrome will also appear here along with recent applications; both your Gmail Inbox and a draft email message will appear as separate cards.  This provides a consistent way to switch amongst tasks.
  • Flashlight: Lollipop includes a new flashlight option as part of Quick settings (swipe down with two fingers from the status bar to see it).
  • Pin a view/app: Screen pinning allows you to keep a specific app or screen in view. For example, you can ‘pin’ a game and your child will not be able to navigate anywhere else on your phone.
  • Battery: The Battery settings panel now shows an estimated projection for how much time you have left while discharging or charging.  You can also enable a new battery saver mode that will save power by reducing performance and most background data operations to extend your battery life.
  • Smarter Internet Connections: With Android Lollipop, your phone will not connect to a Wi-Fi access point unless there is a verified Internet connection. This feature improves hand-offs between Wi-Fi and cellular connections, helping to maintain your video chat or voice-over-IP (VoIP) call as you switch.
  • Performance: Your phone now uses the new Android Runtime to help optimize application performance.  After upgrading to Lollipop, your applications will undergo a one-time optimization process.  Note that the optimization for ART requires more space.
  • Security: Encryption can now use a stronger 256-bit key to help protect your data.  Note that the stronger key willonly be used after you perform a factory reset on Android Lollipop.  Otherwise encryption will continue to use 128-bit key.  You can turn on encryption in the Security settings menu.

AT&T to offer the LG G Flex 2 starting April 24

The LG G Flex 2 has been only available at Sprint here in the U.S., but there will be another option soon. AT&T will carry the curved device in select AT&T stores and online on April 24. So far, they only plan on carrying the Platinum Silver version.

Pricing will be $299 with a two year contract or you can opt for a payment plan on AT&T Next with $0 down. You can go for the 30 month plan, which will be $23.64 per month or the 24 month plan, which is $29.55 per month, and finally, the 20 month plan, which is $35.45 per month. This brings the full retail no commitment price to $708.99.

The G Flex 2 is a really nice phone, but with the Galaxy S6 available at $199 now, save a $100 and get the better phone.

Leaked renders allegedly showcase the design of the Xperia Z3 Neo

Some leaked internal press renders have surfaced today, allegedly showcasing the design of the long-awaited Xperia Z3 Neo. However, we can’t actually be certain that handset in these shots is the device the leaker specified as one of the images is annotated with the text “Xperia Z The Fourth Generation” — so it could, in fact, be the upcoming Xperia Z4.

Recent rumors suggest that the Xperia Z3 Neo will pack a 4.8-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 chipset, 3GB of RAM, a 20.7-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 2.2-megapixel front-facing shooter and a 3,100 mAh battery.

Android Wear gets major update with Wi-Fi support, always-on apps, emojis and more

All Android Wear watches will be receiving a major update over the next few weeks, and there are a lot of goodies.

The first one, which was already expected is the support for Wi-Fi. There are often times when you might forget your phone at home or you walk too far away from it within your own house. Now with Wi-Fi support, your watch will always have a connection so you don’t have to worry about missing any notifications.

With many watches offering an always-on display for watch faces, Google is adding support for always-on apps as well. There might be times in which you need to see an app for a longer period of time and that’s exactly where this new feature will come in handy. You even get full color. I am not sure exactly what Google is adding to the code because there are already apps that stay on all the time until I close it. Examples of such apps include Wear Codes and Coffee Time.

Next up seems Apple-watch like with the ability to draw emojis that you can send via message or text.

One of the biggest complaints with Android Wear has been the process in starting an app without voice. Google has added an adjustment in that when you tap on the watch face, you will get a list of apps that you can open right away. Swipe to the left and you will see favorite contacts, and swipe one more time, and you will see the familiar “Speak Now” screen that you get now.

Last but not least, if your other hand is busy doing something else, you can still flick through your notifications by simply flick your wrist to scroll through your stream.

All in all, this looks like a pretty good update. As I mentioned already, the update will roll out to all seven watches in the next few weeks. The LG Watch Urbane will be the first to get the update though.

Leaked pictures reveal that the Honor 7 will pack a fingerprint scanner

Earlier today, a tetrad of leaked images appeared online, revealing the design of Huawei’s upcoming flagship smartphone of 2015, the Honor 7.

After scrutinising the aforementioned photos, we presume that the Honor 7 will sport a larger screen than its predecessor as its backplate is significantly bigger.

There are also two new cutouts on the plate, which we suspect are for a fingerprint scanner and/or heart rate monitor; both largely-rumored features for the forthcoming handset.

Samsung’s logos absent on the Japanese S6 and S6 Edge

While company and carrier logos are a hot button for people in the United States — thank you Verizon — it may not be that way across the rest of the planet. Even so, Samsung is doing something different in Japan and removing all of its company logos from the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge devices sold there. Instead, the devices are being branded differently.

That’s right, instead of the Samsung Galaxy S6, the devices are being branded as the DoCoMo Galaxy and au Galaxy. There’s nothing from Samsung saying why it agreed to do this with its Japanese carrier partners, so we’re really not sure as to why the company would want to do this.

Samsung and Partners Healthcare sign agreement to develop mobile health solutions

Samsung and Partners Healthcare announced this morning a new partnership to develop the “next generation of personalized digitaal and mobile solutions for health and wellness.” A multi-phase deal that will design tools for help with monitoring a variety of health aspects.

The first phase of this partnership will include software development as well as clinical research that will help deliver tools to improve management for chronic diseases. These will include remote monitoring programs that will help both patients and providers manage chronic conditions. Not only that but patients will be able to track their health, share personal health data with their providers securely.

Some of the programs for monitoring include blood pressure, blood glucose and weight. Samsung’s Digital Media and Communications R&D center will oversee the program but it looks like a new age of mobile health monitoring is upon us.

Korean LG G4 phones to get one year of free screen replacement

The LG G4 is gearing up to be a pretty amazing device. Given that the G3 was heralded as one of the better devices of 2014, the G4 should follow suit and there will be many who will most likely pick it up. That said, it looks like LG is sweeting the pot a little bit by offering a year of free screen replacement if you meet certain criteria.

In order to get the screen replacement, you have to purchase the device before May 31, and you have to be in Korea. Yeah that’s right, this is currently rumored to be a Korean exclusive for the time being. LG is also throwing in a 64GB microSD card into the deal. But that’s not just it.

The phone is set for a Tuesday, April 28, announcement.

It was just about one year ago to the day (actually 4/23) when the OnePlus was announced to the world. It has been a crazy ride for sure with interesting marketing promotions and such. Probably the craziest thing has been the invite system, but that is no more starting today. The OnePlus is now available globally every day of the week, and you don’t need an invite. This isn’t for a limited time either, it’s forever.

Sony’s Xperia Z4 is official with 5.2-Inch Full HD display, Snapdragon 810 processor and wide angle selfie camera in tow

Here we have the official launch of the Sony Xperia Z4 in Japan, as predicted would happen. Unlike the big-budget launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6 though, Sony has decided to announce its new flagship handset in its home market simply by releasing a press release detailing its specifications and features. Read into that what you will.

The Sony Xperia Z4 carries most of the hardware that we would expect to see in a flagship smartphone at this time. Although, like HTC did with its One M9, Sony has also decided to stay with a Full HD display instead of upping the resolution to Quad HD like LG and Samsung have. It’s a subjective topic, some will appreciate that the Full HD display will be more energy-efficient while others will long for a higher resolution.

As you can see from the pictures, the Xperia Z4 sports Sony’s Omnibalance design language, and so is very similar in appearance to its predecessor, the Z3. It’s available in the following colours: White, Black, Copper and Aqua Green.

Google releases new Project Loon update video

Google’s Project Loon continues development from an audacious goal to use balloons to provide Internet service to areas traditionally un- or under-served to being a reality that provides service to 2 out of 3 Internet users. In their latest video about Project Loon, the Google team talks about how they have been working to ramp up their capabilities for a mass deployment.


Some of the challenges discussed in the video include things like the manufacture and launch of the balloons. When the project first start, producing a working balloon was a long process that frequently involved hunts for leaks. Now, the company is able to produce a functional balloon in a matter of hours. Likewise, Project Loon has improved the launch schedule from one balloon per day to a dozen.

Google Wallet balances to get FDIC protection

If you use Google Wallet and keep a balance of funds available in your account, Google is taking steps to help make things a little bit safer for you. Google is now moving funds stored in Google Wallet accounts into FDIC-insured bank accounts. Hopefully this extra insurance would never be something users have to take advantage of, but if they do they now have insurance up to $250,000 on the funds on deposit.


Normally users would not keep a balance in Google Wallet, using the service merely as a pass-through mechanisms. This is similar to how other services like PayPal operate. However, it is possible for users to end up with balances in their account. Sometimes this may be intentional as the user wants funds to be available in the account. Other times it may be because the user has assumed funds would be moved automatically.


Google Wallet competitors like PayPal and Venmo currently do not offer to put user funds in FDIC-insured institutions. However, PayPal does offer zero liability protection against fraud which would cover most typical situations where a user’s funds might be at risk.

Android 5.1.1 builds spotted for the Nexus 9 and Nexus 7 2013

With Android 5.1 out for most GPE and Nexus devices, attentions have moved on to the next version of Android and it looks like Google is getting ready to deliver. While not as exciting as the idea of Android 5.2 or 6.0, it looks like Google is readying 5.1.1, at least for two devices so far.



The Nexus 9 doesn’t have 5.1 officially yet but it looks like Google has 5.1.1 testing on the tablet under build LMY47S. The WiFi Nexus 7 2013 is also testing a 5.1.1 build under LMY47W. The 5.1.1 build is present on Android.com so it will be interesting to see if this rolls out officially here soon. The builds are from Feb. 16, and we’re not sure if we’ll see a newer build officially drop.

Google+ update brings major redesign for Communities [APK Download]

Google is currently in the process pushing out an update for its official Google+ application. This upgrade doesn’t deliver any new features, but it does transport a major redesign for the Communities section of the app and carries a handful of bug fixes, too.



Here’s what the search engine giant had to say:


“Check out your favorite community on Android to see the new and improved look in this week’s app update (currently rolling out). We hope you’ll love it!”


To install the update, simply open up the Play Store on your device, toggle the hamburger menu by swiping in from the left-hand side of the screen, select ‘My Apps’ and click on ‘Google+’. Next, hit the update button, and the upgrade will instantly start to download and install. Alternatively, you can download the APK by hitting the source link below.

Chrome 43 Beta released with new support for the musicians of the world

Google’s Chrome team has released an update to the Beta channel, Chrome 43, with support for MIDI devices, a new Permissions API, and a host of other changes and improvements. The new Web MIDI API included in Chrome 43 means users can make use of connected MIDI devices when accessing an online resource. MIDI devices include things like synthesizers, keyboards, DJ decks and drum machines amongst others. With the update, once a user plugs one of these devices into their system, even an Android tablet or smartphone, the device will be able to communicate with web sites without any additional work by the user to load software or drivers.


The new Chrome 43 beta also tries to make it easier on users when they receive prompts about certain systems that require permission. An example would be sites that want to geolocate a user, a step that often triggered a prompt to let the site use their location. Unfortunately, these prompts often do not include any information for a user to determine the context or purpose. The new API applies to permission status checks for Geolocation, Push, Notifications and the new Web MIDI and will allow web site developers to ask for permission with some context for the end user.


Many of the other improvements involve under the hood changes intended to help web site developers use the browser more effectively. A few of these may be noticed by end users. For instance, Google is working on code to transition unmodifiable legacy web content to encrypted and authenticated content that can be delivered via HTTPS. This means users may see fewer warnings about mixed content on a site that they otherwise expect to me secured. Another change is the ability for the autocapitalize property to be used in input and textarea elements when users are entering information.

Roommates stab each other in iPhone versus Android debate

It’s a debate almost as old as time. OK, it’s really not but it’s been a debate since the modern incursion of smartphones pit the iPhone and iOS versus Google’s Android platform. Fanboys on each side, spend announcement days bashing the other company’s newest device while offering quips about how their favorite OS is better. Well it looks like two roommates are paying the price for their ultimate fanboyism as the the men stabbed each other during an iPhone versus Android debate.



In what could be taken away from a bar brawl movie scene, two roommates in Tulsa, Oklahoma, took the argument to the next level after stabbing each other with broken beer bottles.


Tusla station KTUL reports, “Tulsa police say a woman found a man covered in blood, stumbling around the parking lot of the Evergreen Apartments around 1 a.m.”


When the police arrived, they found the roommates had been drinking a bit and arguing about smartphones. Before stabbing each other, the pair broke their beer bottles with one of the men smashing a bottle over the other’s head. The roommates have been treated for their injuries but charges have yet to be filed.


While the debate has always been silly, this takes the cake and should hopefully shed some light on how ridiculous the argument really is.

Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 pre-order price lowered to $199 through April 20

This spring, Alcatel OneTouch is preparing to release their Idol 3 handset that offers respectable specifications at an affordable price. The Idol 3 has a 5.5-inch display with 1920×1080 resolution, front-facing speakers from JBL, Android 5.0 Lollipop, and a 13MP rear camera. All of this is packaged together for $279 seems like a fair price, right? Sure, but you can pre-order the Idol 3 for even less through April 20.


Alcatel OneTouch is hosting a pre-sale that lowers the Idol 3’s price to $199 that ends on Monday. The pre-order price then increases a still-discounted $249. It is an unlocked device working on GSM networks including AT&T and T-Mobile, so giving the Idol 3 a look isn’t such a bad idea.

Google improves presentation of URLs in mobile search results

The next time you search for something on your smartphone or tablet, you might notice a small change in the search results. Instead of displaying long URL names, Google will now display the real-world name of the site and the actual URL will be in a breadcrumbs-like format.


This is obviously more simplified, but it also helps users understand websites better. You can see the before (left) and after (right) in the image above.



The update is taking place gradually so you might not see the change right away. Real-world names will only be available in the U.S, and the new breadcrumbs format will be available worldwide.

Screenshot allegedly confirms LG G4 will be powered by the Snapdragon 808

A couple of weeks ago a benchmark surfaced indicating the LG G4 will sport the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 under the hood. This came as a shock since the G Flex has the better Snapdragon 810.


Now we have yet another confirmation. This time it’s a screenshot, but there is no proof that it’s actually from a G4.



Assuming both the benchmark and this screenshot are true representations, it still doesn’t solidify that the G4 will have the 808. This information could be from prototype devices. Still, one has to wonder if the 810 really does suffer from the claimed issues. There has been a lot of back and forth going on and Qualcomm’s spin has always been that Samsung wanted to use their own Exynos processor, so they cooked up the rumors.


The 808 is a hex-core processor, which is 64-bit and consists of a quad-core Cortex-A53 and a dual-core Cortex-A57.
